Numbers Game

What’s Happening: Commissioner Gary Bettman has to be excited about the NHL’s TV ratings during the first week of play, proving that hockey fans are excited their favorite game is back.

Tell Me More: NBC released their viewership numbers Sunday, which found that Game #1 of the Penguins/Canadiens series was the second most-watched game of the 2019-2020 season, trailing only the Winter Classic.

And There’s This: Saturday’s two games on NBC averaged 1.361 million viewers, making it the most-watched doubleheader in four years, excluding traditional playoff games.

Out West, the Seattle Kraken are also pleased with how things are going — they’ve sold all kinds of merchandise since revealing their nickname two weeks ago. According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, “Twelve days after the Kraken officially unveiled their name, logo and colors, the team is still responsible for two of the top-three selling products across all Fanatics sites.”

The Bigger Picture: The name reveal is also helping with ticket sales. “The Kraken report that since revealing their name, they have a 35% increase in their season ticket-holder waiting list, bringing the total from 39,000 to 51,000. That's on top of the 32,000 fans who have already put down deposits for season tickets.”
