What should NHL fans expect from the Seattle Kraken?

Seattle Kraken: Prospective Players, Expansion Draft, and What to Expect in the 2021-22 Season

Who is Luke Henman? Luke Henman, the 21-year old from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, is the first official Seattle Kraken player. After he formally signed a three-year entry-level contract with the franchise, let's get to know him.

Luke Henman was drafted in the 4th round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He has competed in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as a member of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada since the 2017-18 season. In the 2019-20 season, Henman scored 25 goals and tallied 49 assists for 74 points across 63 contests, when he averaged 1.17 points per game. In the 2020-21 season, he took his game to the next level, scoring 16 goals and recording 27 assists for 43 points in just 32 games while averaging 1.34 points per game.

As the team captain and budding star for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Luke Henman will head into the Seattle Kraken locker room as an NHL rookie and compete for a spot on the team.

How will the Seattle Kraken Acquire Players? One way the Seattle Kraken will acquire players is via the 2021 Expansion Draft, which takes place on July 21. While the Las Vegas Knights are excluded from the 2021 Expansion Draft, the other 30 NHL franchises are obligated to offer players to the Kraken.

The Seattle Kraken will choose one player from each NHL team, including 14 forwards, nine defensemen, three goalies, and four additional players for whichever position they wish. The 30 NHL teams must suggest their list of available players by July 17, just days before the expansion draft on July 21, including at least two forwards, one defenseman, and one goalie.

But, the Expansion Draft isn't the only way the Kraken can obtain players. There will be a three-day exclusive window for the Kraken to negotiate and sign up to 10 unrestricted free agents from July 18 to July 21, leading up to the Expansion Draft.
The Kraken are also looking ahead to the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, held on July 23-24. The Seattle Kraken have the 3rd best odds at the number one overall pick in the draft and are guaranteed to have a draft pick within the top five picks.

What to Expect in the Kraken's Inaugural Season: With the introduction of the NHL's newest franchise, the Seattle Kraken will shake up the current divisions. The Kraken will be in the Pacific Division, with the Arizona Coyotes moving to the Central Division. Before the Kraken, the last team to enter the league was the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. The Golden Knights had a remarkable inaugural season when they went 51-24-7 and had the 3rd best record in the Western Conference. The Golden Knights advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before falling to the Washington Capitals in 5 games. Perhaps the Seattle Kraken will emerge on the scene and make noise in the Western Conference as well.
